Abstract
The Conference Diffusion Fundamentals I held from September 22nd-24th, 2005, in Leipzig, Germany, addressed various issues regarding the basic phenomena of nature, the omnipresent irregular movement of atoms and molecules in matter. The 19 invited lectures dealt with the interdisciplinary fields of diffusion in solids, fluids, holes and channels, as well as diffusion in soft matter including living cells. About 150 posters on current research projects gave an overview of the state of the art. Extensive cross-referencing of the posters by the plenary speakers and other lecturers brought together different parts of diffusion community and promoted student interactions with established researchers. The positive response of the 280 participants has further motivated the Scientific Committee of Diffusion Fundamentals to start a conference series in mid-August 2007 devoted to the basic principles of theory, experiments and application of diffusion.
