Abstract
Starting from the observation of speechlessness towards the experience of ‘Anfechtung’ as an essential part of Martin Luther’s theology, this study critically evaluates central church events of 2017, especially the debate initiated by Pope Francis on the Lord’s Prayer. Based on an analysis of Luther’s interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer in his catechisms of 1519 and 1529, this essay outlines his understanding of ‘Anfechtung’ and relates it to the debate of 2017. The essay finally discusses the concept of ‘Anfechtung’ in terms of its relevance for theology and the church of the present.
