Abstract
It is well known that vocational training in Germany is to a large extent organized in the dual system, but the vocational training system also includes advanced vocational qualifications, which can be obtained after vocational training in order to reach executive positions in crafts and industry. In addition to this, graduates of a vocational degree can then also enter tertiary education. This paper examines these advanced vocational pathways and sheds light on the effects of social background, previous pathways and cohort. We use the BIBB / BAuA Employment Survey from 2012 and apply multinomial logit analyses. We observe an increase in postponed higher education entries, which is, however, largely explained by an increasing number of students who do not directly enter higher education after upper secondary graduation but choose vocational training instead. Across cohorts, the participation of lower secondary graduates in advanced vocational training and higher education decreases. We also observe that students from upper socio-economic backgrounds do not only more often enter higher education directly after graduation from upper secondary school, but they also use the possibility of postponed entry more often. However, the analysis also shows that the social background effect is to a large part explained by the higher proportion of upper secondary graduates in this group.
