Abstract
For mechanical engineering purposes, rolling element bearings are mainly lubricated with grease. A study on the influence of antioxidants on grease properties and grease service life as well as their impact on boundary layers was carried out. Six batches of grease were tested consisting of the same basic grease in combination with four different antioxidants and a mixture of two of these antioxidants. Antioxidants had a significant influence on grease service life, e.g., prevented the oxidation of the lubricant and influenced and promoted the formation of boundary layers. Results of time-of-flight secondary ion MS, IR spectroscopy, nano hardness measurement, and scratch tests on the influence of antioxidants on grease properties and boundary layer composition were presented.
