Abstract
This paper describes the possibility to determine the degree of polymerization of insulating paper for transformers through an optical measuring method. Knowledge of the current aging condition of the insulating paper is of decisive importance for the operational safety of transformers. Aging processes continuously reduce the mechanical stability of the insulating paper, increasing the risk of unscheduled failures. A novel, patented method was developed for the determination of the current paper condition, which allows conclusions to be drawn about the degree of polymerization of the insulating paper by evaluating reflected light. For this purpose, a light source is used and the measurement of its reflection spectrum via optical fibers and a compact spectrometer is performed. The investigation shows that the reflectance spectrum changes with the aging state of the insulating paper, in which a value can be calculated that shows a very strong linear correlation with the degree of polymerization of the paper. This form of measurement method offers for the first time the possibility to measure the degree of polymerization directly in the transformer and during the operation of the asset. Thus, this measurement method can be used to increase the reliability of transformers.
