Abstract
This paper introduces a supersonic impulse turbine which was designed for an ORC for a commercial vehicle running with ethanol. The application is characterized by challenging conditions for a turbine, such as a very high pressure ratio of up to 49 and a low mass flow. This results in a very high rotational speed of up to 110, 000 min"1. The developed expansion machine consists of the turbine and a directly coupled high-speed generator suitable for these speeds. The paper presents the mechanical design of the machine and shows the rotordynamics of the system. Finally, experimental results are presented for selected operating points.
