Abstract
The lack of vocational skills observed in adolescents in the transition system tends to be explained from a competence perspective, in terms of poor (school) performance, and is thus individualized. As, however, school-based knowledge alone does not account for inequalities in the access to vocational training, this paper looks at the social background of adolescents attending prevocational training programmes as a potential barrier to company-based vocational training. In view of the fact that the particular, youth-specific habitus of the adolescents runs contrary to the expectations of in-company vocational training, the educational promotion of vocational skills does by no means aim only at the skills and competencies of young people, but pays equal attention to their socially shaped body practices, clothing styles and linguistic patterns. The authors will illustrate this in detail by way of an ethnographic study on everyday classroom practice in school-based prevocational training.
