N1 - Funding Information: By using the contested statement from Hasan and Dwyer (2010) in our paper, it was our intention to point out that an eco-effective transformation in the road transport sector requires a well-to-wheel consideration including all emissions related to fuel production, processing, distribution, and use. Regarding this aspect, we apologize for the lack of specificity in our paper, and thank the author of the comment for motivating us to write our responses in order to provide clarification. We also would like to thank the editors to provide us the possibility to add our reasoning in this reply. Our research was funded by a grant from the Australian Research Council (DP150100163) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (16SNI011B).
