Abstract
This report covers the activities of two task forces of CIGRE W. G. 15. 02 (Dielectric Liquids) to develop an acceptable partial discharge technique to characterize liquids, and to elucidate the physico-chemical processes in the gassing of liquids and develop a gassing test method. Three partial discharge methods are considered. One uses a coaxial capacitor model. Another uses an impregnated barrier model. The third method uses an all-liquid needle-to-plane gap. Consideration is given to discharge criteria, and to specimen treatment and conditioning. In the studies of gassing, an improved test cell was used which contains a disc shaped bubble in the liquid. A gassing rate was defined, and measurements showed that it is related to the nature of the liquid. Both task forces are continuing their respective activities.
