Abstract
Deep rolling positively affects the surface layer characteristics of machined workpieces. The influences of the system and process parameters of the deep rolling process on the surface layer characteristics are studied within a current research project. Through this knowledge it is possible to dimension a multiple-ball tool to reduce the primary processing time. A significant improvement of surface roughness and the introduction of compressive residual stress into the subsurface layer can be achieved on hardened and tempered 42CrMo4. Main factors of influence on the results of the deep rolling process are rolling pressure, ball diameter and rolling feed.
