Abstract
In PowerPoint presentations of academic lectures speakers tend to display behaviors that fail to guide the audience's attention. In order to explain this observation, several criteria of professional presentation are discussed which account for the trend towards PowerPoint presentations. Emphasis is put on three aspects of the spatial coordination between speaker and audience: coordination in primary space, in perceptual space, and in deictic space. While the interaction between these aspects is optimally suited to guide the listener's attention in connection with overhead transparencies, PowerPoint slides require other presentation skills.
