Abstract
To ensure the future viability of manufacturing companies, it is the task of factory planning to adapt factory operations to current requirements. In order to be able to examine the realistic behavior of a production system under the influences of the VUCA world, all essential design elements and their characteristics were identified and analyzed. To this end, the terms production system and sustainability were first defined. Relevant design elements were then identified by defining criteria. Finally, relevant forms of each design element were identified and compiled so that manufacturing companies can model their individual production systems. In this way, production systems can be fundamentally modeled and analyzed.
