Abstract

Electromagnetic measurements can provide valuable background information for many hydrogeological questions such as clay occurrence or saltwater intrusion. By using magnetic field sensors on a drone, one can efficiently cover large areas. A grounded electric dipole with a high voltage source generates an alternating current over a range of frequencies (32 Hz to 5 kHz). We show first results of a drone based semi-airborne setting on a site adjacent to the North Sea coast, where saltwater is intruding into a freshwater aquifer. We show the way from processing the raw magnetic data to subsurface models using a 500 m long line. Comparison to ground ERT and helicopter EM data shows the applicability of the methodology.
