Abstract
A mathematical model to decompose the analysis of mutual coupling in antenna arrays into lower level aspects is proposed in [1]. Thereby, characteristic modes are used as an interface to split the analysis of the coupling phenomena into two subproblems: The first subproblem is which characteristic modes are excited to which extent by the individual array elements without the presence of the other elements, and the other subproblem is how the characteristic modes of the elements are coupled to the characteristic modes of the other elements.
