Abstract
In describing the affect of compassion by the verb σπλαγχνíζομαι the Synoptic Gospels link this affect to an activity of the inner organs (σπλγχνα). The present article analyses the specific Lukan use of σπλαγχνíζομαι and shows that a recurring narrative scheme exists within the third gospel that consists of the elements visual perception, σπλαγχνíζομαι, movement, and touch. Accordingly, the gospel of Luke depicts compassion as a bodily process. This process can be interpreted against the backdrop of ancient Hellenistic anthropology. Ancient treatises on medicine and philosophy conceptualize the body as a porous entity that is exposed to external influences. The gospel of Luke shares this common notion and repeatedly describes a process of compassion that is stimulated by the visual impression, entering the body and initiating activity within the inner organs. This inner flow culminates in the physical touch of the object of compassion. The Lukan Jesus, however, is modeled after the ideal of the Stoic sage and thus can hardly ever be moved by affects.
