Description

Concept presentation:
The need for fast and data intensive communications is leading to the increasingly ubiquitous installation of 5G New Radio networks. Although 5G NR is not specifically designed for localization, the variable signal structure promises an accuracy comparable to GNSS. Therefore, 5G NR can be an alternative or complement for positioning when GNSS signals are not available or their accuracy is limited by the environment.
To further investigate the capabilities and accuracy of 5G NR localization, a simulation environment is created to discuss the properties of the variable signal structures on positioning. The opportunistic approach pursues the goal of implementing the localization algorithm generally valid and independent of network operators. Possible issues in the process of the research are the synchronization of the individual transmitting stations and the receiver, as well as the integration of additional sensors to achieve collaborative improvements in accuracy.
