Abstract
In this paper a new modeling approach for granular materials is proposed. It enables the consideration of problems in which localizations occur, like e.g. in shear bands. The approach is based on a discrete method that takes into account the grain structure and the interaction between individual grains. The effective behavior of the discrete model is determined via a homogenization scheme and a continuum model is fit to this behavior. Now, in domains of large deformations the granular material is modeled by the computationally expensive discrete method, while in the remaining domains the material is considered as continuum and modeled by the effcient finite element method. For this purpose a scheme is developed to couple the continuum and the discrete model at the interfaces. The resulting two-scale model enables the consideration of problems not feasible with former models.
