Abstract

This article focuses on the spatial distribution of .de-domains in German regions at the level of the 97 German planning regions and 444 counties. The author tries to explain the spatial distribution with the help of the "economic geography of talent" hypothesis developed recently by RICHARD FLORIDA. The complete set of original data as provided by Denic Inc., where all .de-domains have to be registered, is used. Results show that the diffusion of the innovation "internet domain" followed a clear core-to-periphery pattern, which is even more pronounced than ten years ago when the first .de-domains were registered. Statistical research, namely bivariate and multivariate analyses, confirms that the empirical findings for US regions are also valid in Germany: Highly-educated individuals, employed in knowledge-intensive business services and living in single households are mainly responsible for the fact that most .de-domains (in absolute and relative terms) exist in large urban agglomerations and, especially, in their inner cities.
