Abstract
We have made the first measurements of the time-resolved luminescence of two-dimensional electrons confined in GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions in the regime of Wigner crystallization. We find that the recombination time for electrons in the pinned Wigner-solid phase is up to several orders of magnitude longer than for electrons in the liquid phase. The different time scales allow us to investigate the properties of liquid and solid phases independently and to derive a phase diagram for the Wigner crystallization.
