Abstract
Nowadays, the strategic and operative relevance of knowledge for product development and manufacturing is beyond dispute. However, practitioners often question the term "knowledge management" in a controversial manner, as it seems rather vague. Against this background, this paper points out the importance of managing manufacturing knowledge in today's dynamic economic and technologic environment, that is shaped by complex products and processes. In particular, the relationship between organizational structures and knowledge management, respectively the information needs of individuals and their organization, will be pointed out. Within this context, information technology has to be regarded as a necessary tool, but not as a sufficient specification of knowledge management.
