Abstract
Shortening product life cycles, a rising number of product variants and increasing competition are essential parts of a turbulent environment. To better survive in this setting in the future companies have to adjust their production systems to new situations. Companies pursue the philosophies of "Lean Production" or "Transformability" both to preserve and to improve competitiveness. The requirements which arise from these two basic approaches for productions systems are complex and partially working in opposite directions. Therefore, the requirements resulting from these two planning philosophies were determined at the Institute of Production Systems and Logistics (IFA). Furthermore, possible conflict potentials were deduced from these basic approaches to provide a basis for planning both lean and transformable production systems.
