Turbocharger compressor map enhancement for highly efficient combustion engines

Abstract

An optimal matching between turbocharger and engine aims for the best possible utilization of the provided turbine power on the compressor side in order to increase manifold pressure. To cover the engine's demand for combustion air especially at high loads over a wide operating range, a compressor with a wide and stable compressor map is needed. This paper examines a new methodology for turbocharger development processes as well as different methods for the enhancement of the map characteristics of a turbocharger centrifugal compressor for automotive engine applications. To analyze the potential of methods for compressor map enhancement, both numerical and experimental investigation methods are used. An evaluation of the compressor aerodynamics with respect to the engine characteristics is performed to this end. The results show that enhancement of the compressor map is beneficial for the engine, especially by shifting the surge line towards lower mass flow rates. Through stabilizing the compressor map and improving the efficiency in the low flow area of the compressor map, both the stationary and dynamic engine behavior is improved. The methodology introduced into the turbocharger development process proved to be very effective regarding the process of examining the enhancement of the compressor map. From all concepts examined, the combination of variable trim compressor (VTC) upstream and low solidity vaned diffuser (LSVD) downstream of the compressor impeller offers the best performance results.
