Abstract
For the production of exposed concrete two different approaches, namely the classic approach and the self-compacting concrete (SCC) approach, are being widely used. However, further researches in the area of exposed concrete technology have also led to the development of a new concept. Classic Approach: In most exposed concrete projects, ordinary concrete that is rich in fine grains content are used with stiff to soft consistencies. Such concretes usually contain conventional plasticizers, and are poured in the formwork by means of buckets. However, greater care needs to be taken during formwork construction as well as concrete placing and compacting. SCC Approach: This approach adopts the concepts from SCC. Here, all the necessary measures should be taken to make sure that the stringent requirements of SCC are fulfilled. The concrete delivered to the construction site should also have a good uniformity. Hannover Approach: In this approach, a concrete is designed in such a way that it has higher stability against segregation and bleeding while also possessing a favourable consistency for good workability. This is achieved by optimizing the powder content of the concrete. The flowable consistency and the stability characteristics of the concrete are adjusted by using superplasticizers (PCE) and stabilizers. To prevent additional air entrainment, the concrete has to be casted using a pump according to the contractor method.
