Abstract

We have studied the optical absorption of the Cu-oxide families Y1Ba2Cu3O7-δ (YBC), La2CuO4+δ (LC)and Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8+δ (BSCC). Metallic/superconducting members show a broad peak in the near infrared (NIR) spectral range 1000-7000 cm-1, which is superimposed to a second absorption feature. The temperature dependence of the NIR absorption is related to the superconducting phase transition for all high Tc members investigated in so far. Quantitative data analysis is given for the spectra of the BSCC system. The results suggest the coexistence of localized (small polaron) and delocalized (band) states at the Fermienergy, responsible for the doping dependent metal/insulator transition and possibly the high Tc.
