After her postdoctoral research in neuroscience at the Harvard Medical School Boston, she became an independent research group leader at the Max-Delbrueck-Center Berlin granted by an Emmy Noether Award of the German Research Foundation (DFG). For her research on the role of mitochondria for neurodegeneration and neuroprotection as well as for teaching biochemistry, cell biology, and anatomy at the University Clinic in Aachen, she obtained her “Habilitation” in 2009. The research of Susanne Arnold focuses on structural, functional, and regulatory aspects of the role of cytochrome c oxidase, respiratory chain, and mitochondrial signaling during hypoxic/ischemic processes, in neurodegeneration and –protection. Her work encompasses studies on isolated enzymes, mitochondria, cells, organs, and animal systems. In the past decade, Susanne Arnold has aimed also at identifying molecular and signaling biomarkers and mechanisms of mitochondria underlying degenerative processes.",
