Abstract

Due to the yearly increasing data volume data a volume of over 284 zetabytes is forecast for 2027. It is a challenge concerning data management of this high amount of data managing long-term storage, rapid data retrieval and, above all, regarding archiving the data. A possibility to decrease the amount of space, energy as well as the increase in long term storage is the use of artificial desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The special properties of the DNA make a stable encoding and decoding process possible. Long term storage about 1000 years can be achieved and the amount of space for the storage of the data is small compared to the storage on devices like SSDs, USB sticks and SD cards. Here the possibility of using synthetic DNA molecules for digital DNA storage as a promising storage medium will be explained by the different technological steps which are necessary for this process.
