Abstract

Many approaches have been made to avoid chatter effects in outer diameter grinding. Passive as well as active devices work at the chatter frequency of some 100 Hz. This paper presents a possibility to reduce chatter tendency provoked by small unbalances of grinding wheels using a common infeed drive. It applies an oscillation on the grinding wheel head synchronous to the grinding wheel rotation to achieve constant grinding conditions without peaks in the process force, which can lead to chatter development. A waviness detection of the grinding wheel calculates the required infeed. The dynamics of the machine body, the guideways and the influence of nonlinear effects were analysed. Also an adaptive control was developed to apply the dynamic displacement of the grinding wheel head.
