Abstract
In flames with high degree of turbulence local extinction and ignition processes can be of significant importance. For their description sufficient criteria and mo-dels are not available. In this paper some experimental investigations are reported to describe the lift-off height of premixed bluff-body stabilized flames, being an important model flame for technical burners with flame stabilization due to recirculation. Comparison of measured flame lift-off height for significantly varied exit velocity and stoichiometry with different theoretical models (ignition delay model, local extinction model) shows that no unique model can be found here. While for very lean flames the ignition delay is found to be rate determining, in other cases the lift-off height can be determined by a newly described mixing delay model. A dimensionless turbulent strain rate, often described with a Kovasznay or Karlovitz number, is not a sufficient criterion here.
