Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of ultrashort pulse laser microstructuring of biomaterial surfaces for medical applications. Various structure designs, as well as, influence of structuring procedure on chemical composition and wettability of biomaterials are discussed. In vitro tests of structured biomaterial surfaces in view of prevention of bacterial adhesion and selective control of eukaryotic (tissue) cells are reviewed. In vivo results focused on application of laser microstructuring for modification of cochlear electrodes are reported.
