Abstract
The reflection of an atomic wavepacket on a laser with an evanescent profile is numerically analyzed. The nonadiabatic interaction of the atomic wavepacket with the laser makes evident, under certain conditions, the existence of a stopped excited wavepacket in the direction normal to the laser beam. The reflection is firstly studied for the unrealistic, but easier to handle analytically, case of a square-profile. The results are extended to evanescent profiles. We observe that the transversally stopped excited wavepacket remains for sufficiently nonadiabatic evolution.
