Abstract

Optimal planning of multi-purpose reservoir systems requires long-term simulations of reservoir dynamics. Usually, stochastically generated discharge time series of long duration are used as input for these planning models. Here, daily flow time series are generated simultaneously for five streamlow gauges of a reservoir system in the Harz Mountains. For this purpose, the k-nearest neighbour (k-nn) bootstrap method is employed. Observed streamlow data are repeatedly resampled with reference to observed and simulated climate data. This procedure also allows streamlow simulation for future climate conditions. Validation was implemented by comparing observed and simulated streamlow statistics. All statistics considered have been well reproduced and clear climate change signals produced.
