Abstract
The European Drinking Water Directive foresees that a limit value for lead of 10 μg/L must not be exceeded at each household tap by 2013. It is generally accepted that the replacement of leaden household plumbing is the essential prerequisite to fall reliably below this threshold. However, currently it seems to be extremely improbable that the lead threshold will actually be met nation widely in Germany by 2013. Because to apparently lacking legal pressure, high replacement costs and discomfort as well as an evident absence of an official steering and monitoring further action have to be taken.
