Abstract

This article highlights mechanisms of au thenticity that anchor the game experi- ence as historically credible. Comparing th e historical stagings of the three multi- player online games THE S CRET W RLD (2012), T OM CLANCYS THE DIVISION (2016) and B ATTLEFIELD V (2018), references can be found that link the historical knowledge provided to the collective memory of the acting players. A look into mediality and historicity of MMOs highlights key traditions that have shaped tech- nical and game-cultural fundamentals. Possi bilities for the players to act distin- guish different spaces of historical ag ency among these examples. Communica- tion in social communities finally hints at what players believe to be historically authentic in the knowledge offered.
