Abstract

Global structural analysis becomes more and more a standard design procedure as an answer to the demand for performance based fire design. Furthermore, composite columns are an economical solution for high performance and slender vertical load bearing elements with particular advantages in the fire situation. This paper presents the development of a numerical model to incorporate composite columns in the analysis of global structures. The cross section of the composite column is analysed in pre-processing routines. The obtained stiffness properties are applied to simple beam elements and hence are included in ABAQUS routines. For this contribution the developed model is tested at ambient temperatures. Load bearing capacities of several composite columns are calculated and compared to the results of the design Eurocode model. In the next step of upcoming investigations the elevated temperature will be included in the model.
