Abstract
Large car manufacturers already require long-term warranties for life cycle costs of machine tools. Some consequences of this procedure on the design of machine tools are described in this article. In particular, machine component monitoring is increasingly important to avoid expensive unplanned machine downtime. Exemplarily, a ball screw monitoring approach is presented to estimate the remaining lifetime of the machine component.
