Abstract

In the near future, rigid plastic optical components will replace parts made from glass whenever improved properties and/or lower costs can be achieved. However, the properties of polymers have to be improved in order to match the enhancement in the materials' quality to meet the future demand of industries. This can be achieved by providing the material with a self-cleaning superhydrophilic and photocatalytically active surface layer. From a technical point of view, a good self-cleaning coating exhibits a high photocatalytic activity, excellent wettability by water, strong adhesion of the active film to the surface of the substrate, and stability against exfoliation, stability against abrasion, and optical properties sufficient for the intended application.
