Abstract
The capstan-head shaft is turned by a numerically-controlled drive mechanism also controlling tool-changing and workpiece feed. A motor is coupled by a transmission mechanism allowing no free movement to the capstan-head shaft. The workpiece-spindle (2) slides in the axial direction at least, while a brake (28) acts on the capstan-head shaft (15). Its braking force is variable, dependent on the fluctuations in the driving torque of the motor (18) and/or the oscillation of the tool (11,12). The shaft (15) can be driven by the driving motor and a loading motor, the torque of the latter being dependent on the fluctuations in the driving torque.
