Abstract

Longitudinal residual stresses thread roots of bolts seem to have an effect on the fatigue resistance. In the whole manufacturing chain of bolts it is likely that especially the thread rolling induces residual stresses due to large plastic deformations. This paper deals with the determination of the residual stress distribution in the thread range along the manufacturing chain of hot galvanized bolts with threads rolled before heat treatment. The development of the residual stresses is determined under consideration of single manufacturing steps by destructive testing methods. In addition, results of numerical simulations regarding the thread rolling process are presented.
