Abstract
Life span design can be seen as the key element in life-cycle management of structures. For this purpose, several prognosis models have been developed in recent years in order to describe degradation processes of concrete and to predict the service life of concrete structures. However, the successful application of these models presupposes that the models are able to describe the considered degradation process sufficiently accurate. Furthermore a realistic prognosis implies that adequate input data is available. Due to these aspects, a sufficiently accurate prognosis of service life can meet their limitations in application. A new methodical approach which overcomes these limitations is the concept of relative performance. It is based on the idea of using relative information if there is a lack of absolute values. The present paper introduces the idea of relative performance concepts and illustrates the strategy of this practice-orientated approach in life-cycle management. Furthermore two examples are presented to illustrate this approach.
