Abstract
The dynamics of vegetation has received rising attention in vegetation research. Today, the amount of theories and detailed studies requires at least an attempt for a systematic approach. This essay focuses on processes in the regeneration of plant communities. Along four well established hypotheses (mosaic cycle concept, cohort senescense, gap theory, carousel model), a typology of regeneration processes is set up. As space/time dimensions - and in relation to formations and disturbance regimes - a carousel dynamics on the micro level, a gap dynamics on the mid level and a cohort dynamics on the macro level can be differentiated. This approach results in refelctions to characterize typical disturbance regimes and regeneration processes for each of the Earth's ecozones. According to Schultz (1990, 1995) those are summarized in this essay in a chart.
