Abstract
In additively manufactured electrical machines, larger eddy currents occur than in comparable conventionally manufactured machines due to the absence of laminated iron sheets. This paper presents possible methods of suppressing eddy currents in synchronous reluctance machines. These methods are compared with each other and evaluated, taking into account the effects on the operating behaviour. The additional degree of freedom in the axial direction provided by additive manufacturing is used in the design. First, the geometry and several operating parameters of a synchronous reluctance machine model are presented. This model is transiently simulated in 3D finite element analysis software and serves as a reference. In the following sections, the model is provided with circumferential and axial slots, as well as a combination of the two, in order to investigate the effects on the generation of eddy currents.
