Abstract

An inquiry for the price of a die casting mould will usually result in as many different quotations as companies inquired. The difference in price can amount to up to 300%. At least, that is the alarming result of a case study carried out by the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) in this domain. In addition, a discrepancy between the effort necessary for generating an offer and the amount of orders commissioned by the customer has been found. This article provides an overview about the essential issues and describes the development of a rule-based calculation approach facing this challenge.
