Abstract
This chapter on «radioisotope mass spectrometry» provides an introduction into and an overview on the different techniques used for all kinds of applications of mass spectrometry for the investigation of radioactive isotopes. Research in the full variety of fields as well as investigations of material stemming from all kinds of compartments are covered, including technical and environmental aspects as well as fundamental research topics. Based on a general introduction including the relevant figures of merit for this kind of analytics and research, the different techniques, namely, thermal ionization mass spectrometry, glow discharge mass spectrometry, secondary ionization mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, resonance ionization mass spectrometry, and accelerator mass spectrometry, are discussed. Individual strengths as well as limitations are mentioned, and numerous specific applications are presented. The entire chapter is solidly placed on a vast collection of relevant and up-to-date references.
