Abstract

The "radicalization paradigm"became omnipresent in social, political, and academic discourse. On closer examination we argue that the paradigm is conceptually and analytically weak and its implications for society are highly problematic. The article focuses on fieldwork and other data which were collected in the context of researching radicalization processes. The growing discomfort while researching this topic gave occasion to writing this contribution. For this reason, the authors of the article are proposing a critical inventory of conventional radicalization models and theories and are contrasting it with their own field experiences. The reconstructive analysis of a biographical-narrative interview with an imprisoned and apparent Islamist will show a difference between manifest and latent meaning structure and bemuse the assumptions about Islamist radicalization. The analyzed case study will lead to a plead for alternative perspectives through the use of multiparadigm approaches and an increasingly critical reflection on one's own research and its implications.
