Abstract

Regenerative chatter is a common problem in high performance milling. It is known as vibrations between tool and workpiece occurring when the critical depth of cut is exceeded. These vibrations cause reduced workpiece surface quality, enhanced tool wear and can even damage the spindle. As a result they are limiting the material removal rate. This article deals with the influence of a cutting edge serration on the regenerative chatter. Because of the special cutting edge geometry the milling teeth are sectionally in cut affecting the process stability. On the one hand the effective depth of cut is reduced for serrated endmills. On the other hand the tooth pitch of serrated endmills is unequal along the flutes. Both effects enhance the dynamic stability of such tools.
