Abstract
Advanced Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Detectors: Volume Ii: Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and Beyond (GWDs) set highly demanding requirements on their laser light sources. Even though laser manufacturers for GWDs pay high attention to a low noise design (see Chapter 10), none of the laser parameters as delivered have adequate stability to allow direct injection of the laser beam into the power-recycling cavity of the GWD (see Chapter 2 for optical layouts of GWDs). Hence, special preparation of the laser beam is required, which is often conceptually divided according to whether the components of the stabilized laser reside in the air or in an ultra-high vacuum system. The latter is based on filtering and control via 10–100-m long optical resonators, the so-called input mode-cleaner (see Chapter 18). The laser beam preparation outside the vacuum is typically called the pre-stabilization and constitutes the main topic of this chapter.
