N1 - Funding information: Apart from application in metrology, the quantum Hall effect gave a boost to the physics of low-dimensional systems and preceded the discovery of prominent phenomena like the fractional quantum Hall effect or the conductance quantization in one-dimensional electron systems. Insights into the current status of the field gave the International Symposium “Quantum Hall effect: Past, Present and Future”. The Symposium, sponsored by the DFG Priority Program “Quantum Hall Systems” and the Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung, took place shortly after the 60th birthday of Klaus von Klitzing and was attended by many distinguished colleagues and friends from all around the world, amongst them the Nobel laureates Leo Esaki and Bob Laughlin.
