Abstract

The targeted combination of steel grades, sheet thicknesses and surface coatings in tailored blanks (TB) permits the optimization of components and manufacturing costs. In response to frequent requests from auto industry customers for more detailed component optimization, Thyssen Krupp Stahl (TKS) is developing and operating plant and equipment for the manufacture of tailored blanks with nonlinear welds. Unlike tailored blanks with linear welds, Thyssen engineered blanks (TEB) can feature nonlinear welds. TKS has a comprehensive concept for the development and manufacture of prototype, small-series and volume-production TEBs. In combination with innovative forming and joining technologies and backed by holistic analyses of the properties of the entire body, the use of high-strength steels is gaining in significance. The potential offered by tailored blanking is far from exhausted. If integrated in the vehicle design concept from the outset, the full potential of TBs and TEBs can be utilized in volume production.
