Abstract

The ability to manage a household profitably provides security in difficult supply situations. Conversely, poor management threatens the very existence of a household and puts its members at risk. The need for specialised knowledge of and practical skills in good household management has often been addressed in economic literature, such as in ‘Hausväterliteratur’, which draws upon ancient sources. This includes discussions on the division of labour and the role expectations placed on married couples. However, due to the authority of the figure of the ‘Hausvater’, which
was central to the early modern reception of ancient sources, the role of the wife in the household has been misunderstood and marginalised in older scholarship. Based on a close reading of ancient sources, this chapter critically examines the alleged dominance of the ‘Hausvater’ and reflects on the vital role of the wife as household manager (οἰκονόμος ἀγαθή/oikonomos agathē) in ancient Greek οἶκοι/oikoi.
