Abstract
Grinding is the final step in the production chain of gears and therefore determines the quality of the product. In the industrial practice only gears with high quality requirements are usually ground, otherwise grinding is not carried out to reduce the production costs. In last few years however the percentage of ground gears has been growing continuously due to the rising demands on load capacity, quiet running and life time as well as the increasing performance offered by the grinding processes. Continuous generating grinding by means of cylindrical grinding worms shows the highest potential among the existing processes for gear grinding in series production due to the high material removal performance that can be achieved. The productivity of the process can be further improved by using CBN grinding worms. This more efficient abrasive material is commonly used only in combination with an electroplated, single-layer bonding system. An adequate dressing technology is the basic requirement for using vitreous bonded CBN worms cost-effectively. The challenge consists of creating a suitable grinding layer topography which allows to exploit the potential of this grinding material without causing any degradation of roughness and integrity of the gear surface. Because of the particular shape of the grinding worms, dressing them by means of form rollers can lead to unfavorable working conditions. In particular, the dressing speed ratio is generally higher as in common dressing processes for cylindrical wheels. In the context of this contribution the influence of the dressing parameters on the grinding process using a vitreous bonded CBN grinding worm and the attainable surface properties have been analyzed and evaluated.
